Big New Blog Category & Link

Hi all,
your friendly local Hawai'ian god has a new category for links, "Southwest." It's over on the right-hand side -- and sorry about Joan bleeding into the RH margin over there. She's just so over the top all the time. I'm sorry she's not fronting the Democrats instead of her marginally-reserved twin sister. It'd be a lot more fun to follow. "Hey Murth! Murth! You're making me throw up!" "Ah! Aaaaaggghhh!"

This first link under the new category is a critical find. The Great Taco Hunt is a world-class site that is the ideal of what a blog should be (unlike the fish-wrap you're reading now). It presents localized, unique information from a first-person perspective on a limited topic that is obsessively-covered. And it's a great read, too. The site's creator, Bandini, ought to be slaving away on a book by now.

Have a look and a link -- you won't be sorry. And you'll be surprised about how different the tacos are in California as compared to other parts of the US, including the Southwest. And they have it right over there. Unless your friendly local god was dipping once too often into the washed-up bottle of shochu he recently found, that style taco comes from the interior of Mexico. Other border states' tacos come from a Northern Mexico style, and are beef/chicken-friendly, salsa-poor and Yanqui-influenced (see Wikipedia entries for "lettuce," "tomato" and "processed cheddar cheese."

Nancy Pelosi: Fighting for You in Clothes You Couldn't Afford

By now, everyone knows what Californians have known for years. Nancy Pelosi -- poised to be Speaker of the House -- is an honest-to-goodness piece of Okie white trash who lucked out and generally dun good. Dumber than a mute at a mime convention, Pelosi has fallen to the top of the Democrat Party through a series of missteps, ignorance and misguidance, all tempered by base, animalistic survival skills, and a top-notch plastic surgeon.

But regarding fashion, she ain't stuck on stupid, according to one fawning Beltway press flack. Hat Tip: NewsBusters

WaPo fashion hooker Robin Givhan goes all adjective over Pelosi's clothes, while likely unwittingly pointing out to the Middle Class (who are in a stagnant or declining economic state, according to WaPo) that Pelosi prefers Armani. Which they can't afford even if they've heard of the ultra-high priced faux-foo designer. Gushed Givhan, Pelosi's clothing "speaks of a specific approach to authority and clout." Middle Classers will assume that Pelosi speaks to hypocrisy and arrogance as she reaches out to the poor victims of George Bush (and has her security detail smack the stink out of the plebes who get near her slammin' threads).

So without further ado, here is my mashup poster of Nancy Pelosi, Spokesmensch for the poor and the disenchanted, advocate for the Republican-abused masses, raunchy Revolucionista, and fashion slut, wearing her New Deal/Bushitler Wackjob/Speak Truth to Power mask (by Gucci, of course):

TikiPundit Southwest: Meeting Dick, Getting Dick

Boy, talk about a Texas State Senate candidate just begging for a poll-whipping. Meet Dick Bowen, Republican candidate for District 19. I guess that's in and around El Paso.

The El Paso Chamber of Commerce recently published a Voter's Guide to the 2006 elections. In it, they asked candidates to respond to a series of questions. Most did, with dignity and grace (and the varying level of competence that befits a huge state with varying levels of IQ among its diverse populace).

Besides the ALL-CAPS approach to answers -- an Internet faux-pas from the mid-90s -- Bowen whips out his Royal typewriter from his holster and starts firing point-blank at the first question: his age. See below for Dickwad-goodness. Also, instead of answering other questions, he refers people to his web page, which is surely not a sign of laziness -- a quality we never want in our elected reps.

And, I thought all old people understood when and how to use apostophes.

The man almost comes across at being peeved at having to answer the questions. Lord knows how upset he might be if a consituent actually called him with a problem.

Bowen's answer to the medical school question is priceless.

Enjoy the after-party after you get beaten, "Old Rooster."

Here's Bowen, in fine fettle:

Do you think that the solutions for financing public education passed in the last 79th Special Legislative Session provide an equitable and fair public education system in Texas? What strategies would you propose to developing long term solutions to meet the increasing demand on our public education system?
NO, IT WAS AN EXPEDIENT SOLUTION FOR CAREER POLITICIANS SEEKING
HIGHER OFFICE. SEE MY WEB PAGE AT www.dickbowen.com UNDER PRESS RELEASES TO SEE WHAT I BELIEVE AND
HOW I WOULD PROPOSE SOLVING THE PROBLEMS. TO INCREASE TAXES WITHOUT ELIMINATING THE WASTE, DUPLICATION
AND MISMANGEMENT OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS IS LIKE POURING MONEY DOWN A GIANT RATHOLE. SOME
OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE WELL MANAGED; BUT, THERE ARE NOT MANY OF THEM.

Infrastructure is a cornerstone to economic development. What steps would you take to ensure that El Paso has the necessary, adequate infrastructure to prepare for its growth and the imminent influx of troops due to BRAC?
I WILL PROPOSE ELIMINATING
THE GOVERNORS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FUND WHICH HAS TURNED INTO A POLITICAL SLUSH FUND. I WILL,
THEN, PROPOSE USING THAT MONEY TO ESTABLISH A BOND PROGRAM THAT WILL ENCOURAGE CONSOLIDATION OF
GOVERNMENT ENTITIES; ALLOW COUNTIES AND MUNICIPALITIES TO ISSUE STATE GUARANTEED BONDS TO PAY
FOR INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS. ENTITIES WITH A LOW TAX BASE WOULD REPAY FIVE OR TEN PERCENT
OF THE BONDS; CITIES WITH A HIGHER TAX BASE WOULD BE REQUIRED TO PAY 75%.. THE STATE WOULD PAY FOR
THE BALANCE. THE TAX BASE OF MANY COMMUNITES IN TEXAS IS SHRINKING; THEY CANNOT MAINTAIN THEIR INFRASTRUCTURE.

Please offer your assessment of current funding levels for CHIP and Medicaid. What suggestions do you have for improvement of these programs?
EMPLOYEES OF THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES ESTIMATE THAT ABOUT FORTY
PERCENT (40%) OF ALL CLAIMS ARE FRAUDULENT. PLEASE SEE OUR PRESS RELEASE TITLED “SPANISH LANGUAGE
WEB PAGE” AT www.dickbowen.com FOR FURTHER ELABORATION. THE LEGISLATION THAT WAS PASSED BY THE LAST
REGULAR SESSION OF THE LEGISLATURE WAS VERY POORLY THOUGHT OUT.

What mechanisms do you suggest to assist small businesses in the offering of employee health insurance? Do you think the state has a role in reducing this encumbrance?
I HOPE THAT THE EFFORTS OF MASSACHUSETTS AND A COUPLE OF OTHER
STATES WILL SERVE AS A PRACTICAL GUIDE AND SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. WE NEED TO STUDY AND LEARN
FROM THE SUCCESSES AND FAILURES OF OTHERS. WE CANNOT ALLOW IT TO CONTINUE TO EXIST.

Do you have a proposed solution to insure El Paso receives equitable and fair access to and distribution of state funds allocated for government-provided services?
IT WOULD HELP IF THE EL PASO NEWSPAPERS WOULD RECOGNIZE THAT EL PASO IS
ACTUALLY SERVED BY TWO SENATORIAL DISTRICTS. I LIVE IN EL PASO; BUT, I WILL REPRESENT ALL OF DISTRICT 19
TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. I ASK YOU THE FOLLOWING QUESTION… WHICH CANDIDATE DO YOU BELIEVE WILL
SUPPORT THE INTERESTS OF EL PASO BEST? A SAN ANTONIO ATTORNEY THAT IS USING THE POSITION TO BUILD HIS
LEGAL PRACTICE OR A SEMI-RETIRED MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL THAT OWNS A SMALL BUSINESS AND HAS
LIVED IN EL PASO FIFTY SIX YEARS.

What is your strategy for obtaining funding for the creation of the four-year Medical School in El Paso?
ELECT ‘Dick Bowen’ TO THE STATE SENATE.

Name one service program currently provided by our community, whether sponsored by a governmental entity or any other organization, that you view as ineffective. Explain your choice.
MAKE RASH JUDGEMENTAL CALLS WITHOUT A LOT OF RESEARCH.
I WOULD HOPE THAT NO ONE WOULD ANSWER THIS QUESTION WITHOUT DOING A LOT OF RESEARCH.

Name one service program that you view as critical to the growth of our community and will work on providing, if you are elected. Please elaborate.
SAME ASNSWER AS NUMBER 8.
